MONTREAL, December 8, 2004 – After running a Willis APU on five of his trucks for less than a year, Alain Dube' says the units from Auxiliary Power Dynamics are extending the life of his vehicles' engines, pleasing his drivers and saving him fuel.
Mr. Dube', President of Transports Du Cam Pro Inc., a specialized furniture hauler based in Montreal, is so convinced of the Willis APU's value that he bought two more units recently and has purchased five more units for January delivery.
Mr. Dube' bought Willis APUs because his trucks run in all of the continental United States and a growing number of jurisdictions are barring or restricting diesel engine idling. With Willis APUs installed on their trucks, the drivers are able to turn off the ignition and still remain comfortable while waiting or resting.
“The Willis APU is providing our fleet with many benefits,” Mr. Dube' said. “A major concern for us was how much air conditioning and heating the APU could generate for the comfort of our drivers. The Willis APU provides much more A/C and heat through the cab and sleeper than other units. The drivers also like them because the Willis APU's 3-cylinder engine is quieter and more efficient than the other units we use.
“The units are saving wear and tear on the Caterpillar C-15 engines we run in our tractors,” Mr. Dube' said. “I was told by Cat that for every hour the engine doesn't idle, you save the equivalent of 45 miles on the engine. Instead of trading our trucks at the end of five years, we'll be able to operate them another two to three years without having to rebuild the engines,” he added.
Mr. Dube' noted that he is also saving fuel by running the Willis APU. Compared with up to one gallon of fuel burned each hour a truck idles, the Willis APU uses a quart of fuel per hour. “At the current cost of fuel, the units will pay for themselves in 2-2 ½ years,” Mr. Dube' estimated.
According to Mr. Dube', the Willis APUs have easily outperformed other APUs he has installed on his tractors. About 30 of his fleet's 55 vehicles run with APUs, including the Willis APU. His fleet of tractors, most equipped with sleepers, average about 120,000 miles per year.
Will Watson, VP of Sales and Marketing for APD, said that Mr. Dube' 's enthusiasm for the performance and value of the Willis APU has created strong interest among other Canadian fleets and owner-operators.
Samy Karuppana, President and CEO of Willis APU, said that APD has trained and certified Willis APU installation and service centers in Canada and selected a local sales representative to service its Canadian customers.
Eldon Willis, APD founder and Vice President of Technology, explained that the Willis APU contains an alternator for electrical power, an A/C compressor for cooling and a heat exchanger to extract waste heat for cab and sleeper heating. In addition, APD is the only manufacturer that offers options such as an air compressor, air starter and oil pump for pre-lubricating the engine. Also offered is a 1,750-watt inverter for AC power.
APD is a designer and manufacturer of APUs for the trucking industry. The Willis APU incorporates state-of-the-art engineering with a rugged design to be the premier product in its category.
