SPARKS , Nevada , January 20, 2005 – Penske Truck Leasing has approved Auxiliary Power Dynamics’ Willis APU as an auxiliary power unit supplier for its lease trucks.
Bob Douglas, Penske Vice President of Maintenance, said Penske customers have already started ordering the product, which are installed at APD-approved facilities. Penske leases and rents approximately 60,000 Class 8 trucks in the United States .
“Our lease customers are requesting the Willis APU to reduce idling, save fuel costs and to stay comfortable in their cabs while their truck engine is shut down,” Douglas said.
Douglas said the Willis APU offers superior engineering and use of off-the-shelf components. He noted how the APD unit is integrated into the vehicle’s heating and air conditioning system, supplying all of the truck’s power needs when the engine is shut down. Plus, he pointed to the Willis APU battery-monitoring feature.
“This is a leading auxiliary power platform for the future,” Douglas said. “This system could enable truck manufacturers to remove components such as the alternator, air compressor and air conditioner compressor to reduce weight in the future. This is headed in the right direction.”
“We are excited that Penske selected the Willis APU for its customers who want to take advantage of the many benefits of operating a premium APU in their heavy-duty trucks,” said Samy Karuppana, APD President and CEO.
Will Watson, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for APD, explained that the Willis APU contains an alternator for electrical power, an A/C compressor for cooling and a heat exchanger to extract waste heat for cab and sleeper heating.
In addition, APD is the only manufacturer that offers options such as an air compressor, air starter and oil pump for pre-lubricating the engine. Also offered is a 1,750-watt inverter for AC power.
APD is a designer and manufacturer of APUs for the trucking industry. The Willis APU incorporates state-of-the-art engineering with a rugged design to be the premier product in its category.
