| | SPARKS, Nevada, November 5, 2004 Auxiliary Power Dynamics, manufacturer of the Willis Auxiliary Power Unit, has been selected as an APU supplier for an Oregon pilot program designed to improve air quality and reduce diesel exhaust emissions among trucks.
The Lane (County) Regional Air Pollution Authority of Eugene, Ore., has placed an initial order for Willis APUs to be installed on heavy duty trucks that travel the I-5 corridor between California and Washington state.
Under the program, LRAPA borrowed money from the Oregon Department of Energy to buy the APUs. LRAPA will lease the units to truck operators that qualify under a 5-year lease with option to buy. As part of the lease, the agency will pay to install the APUs.
"The program aims to improve air quality in Lane County, as well as jump start the industry infrastructure to tackle the problem of truck idling and diesel exhaust emissions while reducing fuel consumption," said Sharon Banks, LRAPA director of administration and planning. "We want to educate the trucking industry that diesel exhaust is the leading cause of cancers that result from what we breath in the air a fact that isn't well known."
Samy Karuppana, APD President and CEO, said, "This is a major program that will display the merits of our environmentally friendly product. APD fully supports any program in the United States that will help boost the environment and benefit the truck operator by reducing fuel usage and increasing efficiency."
Banks said nine truck operators have been approved to lease the Willis APU and 15 more are being processed. She said the goal is to install 10 units per month under the lease program and to encourage other trucking firms to buy units from the manufacturers in the program. She added that Oregon-based trucking companies that buy the unit could qualify for a 35% tax credit against their Oregon tax bill.
Eldon Willis, APD vice president of technology and company founder, said other state agencies are organizing similar programs that would support installation and use of APUs. " This program will act as a model for groups in other states to make our units available."
Willis said the Willis APU uses less than a quart of fuel per hour to cool a truck cab or a pint of fuel per hour to heat a truck compared with a gallon of fuel burned up during each hour of idling.
Will Watson, APD Vice President of sales and marketing, explained that the Willis APU contains an alternator for electrical power, an A/C compressor for cooling and a heat exchanger to extract waste heat for cab and sleeper heating. In addition, the APD is the only manufacturer that offers options such as an air compressor, air starter, oil pump for pre-lubricating the engine. Also offered is a 1,750-watt inverter for AC power.
APD is a designer and manufacturer of APUs for the trucking industry. The Willis APU incorporates state-of-the-art engineering with a rugged design to be the premier product in its category.
